Solar Inverter Specifications: DC, Grid, Battery and Document Checklist

China Sourcing Published Oct 11, 2026

Match solar inverter specifications to the PV array, local grid and required operating mode for the exact model and version. AC kW alone cannot establish suitability. Before buying from China, reconcile the manufacturer’s datasheet, installation manual, country documents and proposed system design; hold any electrical or approval field that the responsible designer cannot confirm.

Freeze the identity and document revision

Record maker, full model/suffix, hardware variant, firmware requirements, new/used condition and serial traceability. Define grid-connected PV, off-grid or hybrid use and any required backup function. A seller’s “hybrid” word is not a capability list. Obtain the matching datasheet, installation manual, supplied-accessory list and applicable certificates with document revision and model scope.

SMA’s manual validity page identifies model, firmware and AFCI variants. This shows why document identity matters; its specifications are an example, not values to apply to other inverters.

Read the DC limits as separate conditions

SMA’s DC table separates maximum voltage, MPP range, usable input current and short-circuit current. Copy each relevant field with its input/MPPT basis and footnotes rather than a single “PV input” maximum.

  • Voltage: maximum permitted DC voltage, startup/minimum voltage, MPPT operating range and any narrower range for rated output.
  • Current: operating current and allowable short-circuit current, with whether each limit is per connector, input or tracker; identify parallel-string allocation.
  • Array: exact module datasheet, modules per series string, parallel strings per tracker, orientation and environmental design conditions.
  • Power: permitted array power and conditions, distinct from rated AC output; have the designer confirm array/inverter sizing without borrowing a generic ratio.

Ask the designer for a documented worst-case voltage and current assessment using the actual module data and site temperature/irradiance assumptions. Do not compare only room-condition Voc or divide a total input-current number blindly among strings. SMA warns that excessive array open-circuit voltage can destroy the inverter. A purchasing checklist is not a connection or measurement procedure.

Use the exact model’s conditions and designer-approved array.

Check AC output and grid acceptance independently

Record nominal voltage, frequency, phases, rated active/apparent output, output current and the required grid configuration. SMA’s AC table distinguishes these fields and country-dependent ranges. Ask the installer to reconcile them with the actual connection point and any limit on power fed into the grid.

SMA’s country-data guidance requires a valid installation-site setting and local requirements. Obtain the exact model’s applicable certificate and utility requirements; a certification logo, selectable country menu or another country’s approval does not establish approval at your address. Keep utility approval unresolved until the responsible party supplies it.

Confirm storage, backup and installation requirements

If batteries are required, request the manufacturer’s compatibility evidence for the exact battery model, BMS, voltage range, communication and firmware. Confirm charge/discharge limits and whether meters, controllers or other equipment are needed. For backup, ask which output supports it, continuous/starting load conditions, phase arrangement, transfer method and required equipment. Do not assume a grid inverter supplies loads during an outage.

Check environment/derating, ventilation and mounting requirements, enclosure rating, connectors, supplied parts, monitoring interface and warranty territory. Maximum efficiency is not a site-energy forecast. Ask which functions, accessories or cloud features are included and which require separate purchase or continuing service.

Hypothetical example: two offers have equal AC kW. One omits the per-MPPT current basis; another lacks country-version evidence. Neither should pass approval on power or price alone. Obtain missing documents and a designer decision. No tested product or real installation is implied.

Scope receiving checks and commissioning

At the warehouse verify approved model/labels, serials, accessories, connector condition and visible damage. Agree any functional test with method, safe facility, conditions and acceptance evidence beforehand; photographs do not certify DC performance or grid compliance. Record packing, lifting, dimensions and cargo facts, including batteries if supplied separately or together.

Preserve the approved document package for qualified installation and commissioning under local requirements. Keep receiving acceptance, technical commissioning and utility approval as separate records. Resolve contradictions before energization; this article does not provide wiring instructions or promise acceptance by a grid operator.
