Electric Motor Specifications: Supply, Duty, Mounting and VFD Checklist

China Sourcing Published Oct 11, 2026

Electric motor specifications need to cover the supply, driven load, mounting and operating conditions together. A matching kW value or similar housing does not establish a replacement. Before sourcing an industrial motor from China, build a specification the supplier can confirm line by line and give the responsible engineer the unresolved differences before purchase.

Collect the original evidence and define the application

Save legible nameplate photographs, the existing model and serial references, machine/OEM documentation and an interface drawing. State whether the request is an identical replacement, a proposed alternative or a new design. For a replacement, record what failed and any modifications; an old plate alone cannot explain changed load or site conditions.

ABB’s NEMA guide ties ratings to rated voltage/frequency and separates mounting-frame information from body diameter. Use the exact standard and drawing for your motor. IEC and NEMA references are not interchangeable simply because the power number matches.

Freeze electrical supply and mechanical duty

FieldWhat to provide and ask
SupplyVoltage, phase and frequency at the site; supplier-rated voltage/frequency combinations, current and documented connection for that combination.
Output and loadRequired shaft output and unit, operating speed, driven machine, starting/load profile, duty cycle and permitted starts or reversals to be confirmed by engineering.
DriveDirect supply, starter or exact VFD; required speed/torque envelope, cable/application facts and supplier’s written motor-drive suitability.
EnvironmentAmbient, altitude, dust/moisture, cooling arrangement and any hazardous-area classification that the responsible engineer has established.

Request the values for the actual operating point, not a collection of maximum values from different rows of a brochure. A dual-rated plate must be read as documented combinations; do not mix a voltage from one row with another row’s frequency or connection. Electrical supply input and mechanical shaft output are different quantities. Ask the supplier to identify any derating or operating limitations rather than applying a generic tolerance.

Equal kW does not establish a replacement.

Measure the interfaces and specify accessories

Require mounting code/standard, foot-hole pattern or flange geometry, shaft diameter/length/keyway, shaft height where relevant, body clearance, terminal-box position and cable entry. Add coupling/pulley interface and permitted loads for engineer confirmation. A frame number does not replace the dimensional drawing. Specify rotation requirement and reference viewing direction; do not leave “clockwise” without its reference.

List brake, encoder, temperature sensors, separate fan, heater, bearings and connectors only when required, with model/interface documents. Say what is included and what needs separate supply. Clarify insulation/temperature-rise information, enclosure/IP and efficiency claim with applicable evidence; a logo or nameplate photo does not prove local compliance or hazardous-area suitability.

VFD operation needs its own confirmation

ABB’s drive guidance links speed, loadability and cooling to correct motor-drive sizing. Ask for an approved loadability curve and operating envelope for your proposed pairing, and identify any required insulation, bearing protection, filtering or external cooling from its own documents. Do not import numeric limits from another motor family. Hazardous applications need a specifically suitable documented combination and local technical review.

Copyable supplier confirmation form

Application/replacement reference: […]. Supply V/phase/Hz: […]. Required shaft output/speed/load/duty: […]. Exact motor and drive models: […]. Mounting/shaft drawing revision: […]. Environment and engineering classification: […]. Accessories/interfaces: […]. Required documents and agreed tests: […]. Please mark each field confirmed / difference / unresolved, attach the proposed plate, datasheet and dimensional drawing, and list operating limits. Do not change model, winding, mounting or accessories without written approval.

Hypothetical decision example: two offers show the same kW, but one lacks a shaft drawing and the other does not confirm the required VFD duty. Neither gap is cured by price or an exterior photo. Hold those fields, obtain the missing evidence and have the engineer decide; this is not a tested performance comparison.

Motor acceptance gates

Motor acceptance gates: Supplier, Engineering, Warehouse, Testing, Installation

GateRequired evidence
SupplierPlate, datasheet and drawing agree
EngineeringDuty, interfaces and limits resolved
WarehouseLabels, accessories and visible damage
TestingAgreed method, conditions and report
InstallationQualified commissioning under instructions

Each check has a different evidence scope.

Agree acceptance, packing and installation handoff

Use model-specific and supplementary manuals appropriate to the proposed motor. Agree any factory electrical/mechanical tests, test method, operating conditions, acceptance limits and report identity before ordering. Warehouse photos can verify labels, accessories and visible transport damage, not rated torque, efficiency or insulation performance.

Confirm lifting/packing instructions, shaft and terminal protection, storage requirements, packed dimensions/weight and the destination unloading arrangement. Preserve records for the installer. A qualified team should install and commission under applicable instructions; a sourcing checklist is not a wiring or energization procedure.
